You Can Soon Play Grand Theft Auto Games on Netflix—Here's How

Surprise! Three Grand Theft Auto games are coming to Netflix after all. 

After reports swirled online last month, Netflix has announced that mobile versions of Grand Theft Auto 3, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas are being added to the streaming service’s growing gaming offerings for paying subscribers. The trio of GTA games will go live on the Apple App Store, Google Play Store, and Netflix’s mobile app December 14. 

A Netflix representative previously declined to comment last month, but said that any suggestion that Grand Theft Auto (GTA) would be added to Netflix was just “rumors” and “speculation.” Turns out, that wasn’t actually the case. 

Subscribers can now pre-register to play the three GTA games.

"Rockstar was the very first call I made after agreeing to take the job at Netflix," wrote Ray Bautista, Netflix's Senior Director, Game Partnerships, in a LinkedIn post. "There are very few true needle movers remaining in the games industry today and Grand Theft Auto is one of them."

Netflix’s GTA mobile gaming deal comes as the platform—primarily known for its original television series like “Stranger Things” and “The Crown”—pushes into gaming content. Netflix has already added over 70 downloadable games to its list of subscriber-only content, a rep previously told Decrypt. While some of these games are mobile-only, some can be streamed on a TV or laptop with Netflix’s gaming controller iOS app.

This launch is expected to come around the same time that GTA developer Rockstar Games plans to drop the official trailer for the open-world action game series’ highly-anticipated sixth installment. Grand Theft Auto 6 could release as early as 2024, with recent comments from Rockstar parent company Take Two’s CEO suggesting it could release sometime between April 2024 and March 2025. 

In the meantime, some might try to install user-created mods to shake things up in Grand Theft Auto 5—but you’ll run the risk of receiving a copyright strike and taken down by Rockstar Games, like this mod that let AI-powered NPCs insult you before Rockstar reportedly pulled the fan-made mod from YouTube and NexusMods.
