Bitcoin price remains steady, even though almost $1 billion in options expired yesterday and a hacker drew $150 million worth of cryptocurrencies from KuCoin, a major cryptocurrency exchange.
Despite all the tumult, the price of Bitcoin held strong, increasing by 1.1% over the past day to $10,727, according to data by CoinMarketCap.
And the stability persisted amid higher-than-usual trading volumes. On Thursday, trading volumes for the coin, which is the largest by market capitalization, doubled from $24 billion to $52 billion. Trading volumes have held relatively steady ever since.
So, why might more volatility have been expected? Two reasons, the first of which is the expiry of almost $1 billion worth of Bitcoin options, or about half of Bitcoin's options contracts.
Almost a billion dollars worth of Bitcoin options contracts, a little under half in existence, are set to expire on Friday, per data from Skew analytics. And Ethereum isn’t far behind. About $450 million worth of ETH options contracts expire on the same day. This could potentially introduce a whole lot of crypto back into the market as traders look to dump or HODL. Here’s what to expect. What is an options contract? First things first: What are we talking about? An options contract lets people...
Bitcoin options are like futures contracts—way back in the past, people sign contracts to buy Bitcoin at a certain price at some point in the future. Ideally, Bitcoin will have increased in price, meaning that those signing the contracts secure Bitcoin at price below market value.
Futures contracts oblige the signatory to buy the Bitcoin upon expiry, whereas Bitcoin options contracts merely give them the option, with no obligation to purchase them.
As such, this could have been a major point of volatility, particularly if people dumped all that extra Bitcoin on the market. That could have caused price fluctuations. But, alas, this has not happened.
The second event that threatened the cryptocurrency market with volatility was yesterday’s KuCoin hack, in which hackers stole at least $150 million worth of Ethereum-based cryptocurrencies and an undisclosed amount of cryptocurrencies on other blockchains, among them Bitcoin.
The CEO of cryptocurrency exchange KuCoin today responded to questions about a hack that resulted in at least $150 million of Ethereum tokens being drained from the exchange’s wallets, as well as millions more from other blockchains, including $13 million from Tether based on the EOS blockchain. In a livestream early this morning, KuCoin Global CEO Johnny Lyu said that hackers mostly stole Bitcoin, Ethereum and other ERC-20 tokens (tokens based on the Ethereum token standard), but it is still “...
Once again, hackers could have dumped these cryptocurrencies on the market, crashing it in the resulting chaos. But...this hasn't affected Bitcoin.
So, Bitcoin’s survived a crazy 24 hours. For now.

Texas sheriffs used power tools this week in retrieving $32,000 from a Bitcoin ATM after a Jasper County family said they were scammed out of funds, according to local law enforcement. The family said it had lost $25,000 to the fraudsters. An image shared by the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office on Facebook shows sparks flying as an official uses what appears to be a circular saw to crack into a Bitcoin Depot kiosk. Other images show stacks of hundred dollar bills, evidence bags, and a gas station...
The price of Bitcoin was little changed on Friday as U.S. Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller argued that the U.S. central bank could start lowering interest rates as early as July. Bitcoin was recently changing hands at $104,300, flat over the past day and down 0.6% since Israel and Iran began exchanging missile attacks a week ago, according to crypto data provider CoinGecko. Ethereum was flat over the past 24 hours to trade just around $2,500, while Solana ticked up slightly. With infl...
USDC issuer Circle was buoyant in pre-market trading Friday, climbing above $236 ahead of the opening bell. That put it ahead of the $235 price target set by Wall Street research firm Seaport Global, which initiated coverage of the company today with a buy rating. But once the bell rang, the company's stock, which trades on the NYSE under the CRCL ticker, settled and is currently changing hands around $228, or 14% higher than its previous close. Seaport announced that it was initiating coverage...
