The Shanghai-based Hurun Report, a research institute famous for its annual China Rich List, today released its first Global Unicorn List. There are 11 blockchain companies among the 494 billion-dollar start-up companies researchers identified.

The Hurun Global Unicorn List 2019 ranked technology start-ups which ticked the following boxes: they had a valuation of more than $1 billion; were unlisted on a stock exchange; had no private equity investment and were less than 10 years old.

China's Ant Financial, a FinTech startup, topped the list with a valuation of $150 billion. But which blockchain companies also made the grade?

1. Bitmain

Crypto mining hardware producer Bitmain has a valuation of $12 billion, despite posting a loss of $310 million in the first quarter of this year. The privately-owned Chinese company is the market leader in Bitcoin mining computers. It was originally established to develop an ASIC chip capable of mining Bitcoin, but is now also an investor in mining software, and operates Antpool, one of the largest Bitcoin mining pools. Today it opened what it claims is the “world’s largest” bitcoin mining facility in Rockdale, Texas.

2. Coinbase

Coinbase, the largest crypto exchange in the United States, is valued at $8 billion and based in San Francisco. It was founded in 2012 and has seen $525 million in investments from venture capitalists including Andreessen Horowitz, Greylock Partners and Y Combinator. Coinbase operates in more than 30 countries and Reuters estimates that it brought in $520 million in global revenue last year.

3. Ripple

Ripple Labs is a US-based technology company and creator of the Ripple real-time settlement system which supports the XRP cryptocurrency. The company is based in San Francisco, valued at $5 billion and its technology has been adopted by banks and payment networks such as UniCredit, UBS and Santander.

4. Circle Internet Financial

Circle Internet Financial is a crypto finance company offering peer-to-peer payments. It’s valued at $3 billion and headquartered in Ireland. Last week, Circle announced that it is spinning out its cryptocurrency exchange Poloniex.

5. Canaan

Canaan Creative is a China-based computer hardware manufacturer, established in 2013. It specializes in Blockchain servers and ASIC microprocessor solutions for use in bitcoin mining, and is worth $3 billion. In July (after the cut off point for new data to be added to the Hurun Report) the company is said to have confidentially filed for an IPO in the U.S.

6. Binance

Binance is a global cryptocurrency exchange founded in 2017 and based in Malta. It’s valued at $2 billion and, since 2018 is considered the biggest cryptocurrency exchange in the world in terms of trading volume. Earlier this year, Binance announced a new and controversial peer-to-peer (P2P) cryptocurrency trading service in China.

7. Block.One

Block.one is the company behind the EOS cryptocurrency. It’s was founded in 2016, is based in China and valued at $2 billion. Earlier this month, the company settled charges with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, agreeing to pay a $24 million fine over its unregistered ICO.

9. Ebang

Ebang is third Chinese cryptocurrency mining hardware firm on the list, with a valuation of $1.5 billion. Ebang was founded in 2013 and early this year announced plans to produce 400,000 mining machines in 2019, thus capitalizing on market-leader Bitmain's rumored instability.

10. BitFury

Bitfury is worth $1 billion and claims to be the largest full-service blockchain technology company in the world. The Netherlands-based startup was founded in 2011 and develops software and hardware for governments and organizations. Earlier this month, Bitfury launched its AI unit that will operate alongside the company’s blockchain services.

11 Liquid Global

Founded in 2014, Quoine is a global fintech company that operates global cryptocurrency exchange Liquid Global. In September 2018, Quoine merged its historical trading platforms, Quoinex and Qryptos, and relaunched as Liquid. The company is based in Tokyo and valued at $1 billion.

Notably, the Hurun Report did not include a number of other blockchain startups rumored to have reached unicorn status, including the Robinhood and Kraken cryptocurrency exchanges.

An earlier version of this article mistakenly included WeBank and omitted Ebang. While WeBank is developing a blockchain platform, it's not considered to be a blockchain unicorn, while Ebang undoubtedly is.
