New Robot Guide Dogs for the Blind Use AI to Obey Commands

A team of engineers at a university in China has developed an AI-enabled robotic dog for the blind that has high-end optics to detect changes in the environment and a speed-control cane mounted on its back—but that’s not all. The unit also has audio sensors that allow it to understand voice commands. “The robot comprehends semantic information based on deep learning end-to-end speech recognition models, enabling rapid and accurate responses to voice commands such as ‘start,’ ‘stop,’ and ‘set a d...

AI Can Predict Alzheimer’s Seven Years Before Onset With 70% Accuracy: Study

A novel AI system can predict Alzheimer's disease up to seven years prior to first symptoms, possibly opening the door for earlier treatments, according to research recently featured by the U.S. National Institute of Health. Using patients’ past medical records as data inputs to train the machine learning system, the AI model was 70% accurate at predicting Alzheimer’s seven years out and 80% the day before diagnosis, the study found. In fact, its predictive accuracy improved to as much as 90% wh...

Running AI in the Field Could Boost Farming: Study

The transformative power of AI across industries has great potential in one of the world’s oldest and most critical sectors: agriculture. Specifically, “edge AI” may be able to transform farming practices, boost productivity yields, and hit sustainability goals across the global food chain, a new study suggests. Edge AI is where AI algorithms are programmed directly on local devices "at the edge" of a network instead of in a centralized data center. "Leveraging the integration of sensors and edg...

AI Cancer Detector Boasts 98% Accuracy Across 13 Types: Study

A new artificial intelligence (AI) model was able to detect 13 different types of cancer with 98.2% accuracy using only DNA data from tissue samples, according to a new study. The AI model, dubbed EMethylNET, was developed by researchers at the University of Cambridge in the U.K. and could potentially accelerate early cancer detection, diagnosis, and treatment. The findings, published last week in Biology Methods and Protocols, focused on DNA methylation, a chemical process that occurs early on...

Smart Watches Can Help Detect Parkinson’s Disease Earlier: Study

A recent study found that mainstream, consumer-grade gadgets—specifically, older Apple Watches and iPhones—may help doctors detect signs of Parkinson’s disease earlier, accelerating care options for a neurological disorder that affects 10 million people worldwide. To better equip healthcare providers with a way to identify and detect the progression of the disorder as early as possible, a team of researchers from the University of Rochester Medical Center conducted a 12-month study of 82 individ...

Trump or Biden? Why Crypto Could Decide the Next US President

With 144 days left until the November 5 election to decide the next president of the United States, the most recent data from the polling prognosticators over at ABC News' 538 report a statistical dead heat. However, their new electoral college modeling predicts that Democratic incumbent Joe Biden wins 53 out of 100 simulations, while presumptive Republican challenger Donald Trump wins the remaining 47 computerized scenarios—results that are well within the margin of error. With both party bases...
