How Bitcoiners Are Working With El Salvador's Leaders
In less than 80 days, El Salvador will become the first country to declare Bitcoin as legal tender. To help advance this controversial plan, Bitcoin's flag-bearers have visited the country to speak with politicians, help the El Salvadorans and eye a profit. British Bitcoin podcaster Peter McCormack, for instance, traveled to El Salvador to document the new Bitcoin law. He was invited to create a film about El Salvador’s Bitcoin law by Jack Mallers, whose company, Strike, is piloting Bitcoin pay...

Why Bitcoin Miners Don't Use More Renewable Energy
Though 76% of proof-of-work miners say they use renewable energy as part of their fuel mix, renewables comprise just 39% of the total energy consumption of the world’s cryptocurrency miners, according to a survey by Cambridge University’s Centre for Alternative Finance, published late last month. To mine cryptocurrency, computers race to solve complex computational puzzles. Since brute force is the only way of solving these puzzles, only the most powerful—and therefore most power-hungry—compute...

Bitcoin Price Stable Despite BitMEX Arrests and Trump's COVID Diagnosis
Despite the charges of money-laundering against derivatives giant BitMEX and Trump’s positive COVID test, Bitcoin’s price held steady over the past 24 hours. Meanwhile, decentralized finance coins are on the rise as the summer’s DeFi boom continues. The current price of Bitcoin is $10,542, according to data from Coinmarketcap. It started the week at about $10,900 but fell by $400 on Thursday. Then it recovered slightly, before falling by a further $200 on Friday after the CFTC charged BitMEX wi...

Bitcoin's Price Steadies as DeFi Steals the Show
While DeFi draws investors with tales of 1000% annual yields, Bitcoin, the original cryptocurrency and still by far the largest by market capitalization, is finally stable. It has spent most of the month chugging along at $11,000—give or take one hundred dollars. Its current price is $11,075. After its plummet from about $12,000 to $10,000 after September 1, Bitcoin’s price stayed buoyant for the rest of the month. It spent the subsequent two weeks waffling between $10,200 to $10,600 before sl...

Bitcoin’s Price Holds Steady in Weeks Following Massive Crash
At $10,468, the price of Bitcoin is safely above $10,000 for the fifth day in a row, per metrics site Messari. Traders are still waking up in hot sweats after Bitcoin’s price jumped off a cliff, with startling confidence, at the beginning of this month. It fell from about $12,000 on September 1, its highest price since August 17, to about $10,000 by September 4. But now, its price is steady. It’s the same for other major coins. Etheruem increased by just 2.94% in the past 24 hours; XRP by 2.3...

Ethereum 2.0 on Track For November Launch, Says Dev
Ethereum 2.0, the much-needed and much-delayed update to the Ethereum blockchain, is on track for a November 2020 launch, according to one of its developers. In a blog post summing up recent updates on the long road to Ethereum 2.0, Raul Jordan, an Ethereum 2.0 developer with Ethereum infrastructure builder Prysmatic Lab, said that should various security checks and user experience polishes take place, “November is still looking good for a launch from our perspective.” Ethereum 2.0, the main up...

There Will Be Bitcoin: Oil, Gas and a Cash Cow Under Our Feet
In a joint letter last week, Royal Dutch Shell and British Petroleum, two of the largest oil companies by revenue, encouraged Texas regulators to end natural gas flaring, the routine yet environmentally harmful practice of burning off excess gas that can’t be economically captured or transported. As it turns out, Bitcoin mining might be the way to finally kill the practice. A recent partnership between multinational oil giant Equinor and bitcoin mining firm Crusoe Energy Systems shows how captur...

"Bitcoin Pope" Hit With Cease and Desist Order by Texas Authorities
The Texas Securities Commissioner on Thursday demanded the immediate shutdown of a cryptocurrency investment program it alleges is operated by a would-be guru, one Eric Darwin Balusek, a.k.a. “Bitcoin Pope”. Texas State Securities Board Commissioner Travis J. Iles issued the emergency cease and desist order to Balusek for his involvement in, the Commission alleges, a fraudulent crypto investment scheme that promises investors more than a “hundred percent profit”. Two days after the order was iss...

Banking Difficulties in Latin America Fuel Crypto Adoption
The COVID-19 pandemic has not slowed the number of cryptocurrency transactions in Latin America. In fact, blockchain analysis shows that total cryptocurrency value transferred from the region has increased since March. The largest portion of it is going to East Asia. This is according to blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis, which recently published research showing how unbanked businesses and individuals in Latin America are using cryptocurrency as a means of exchange, a store of value, and a...

Major European Stock Exchange Lists First Bitcoin Product
Wiener Börse, one of the largest Central Europe-based stock exchanges, today listed its first cryptocurrency product. While this appears like a strong adoption signal, these exchange-traded products (ETPs) might also be the latest event in a growing trend that ultimately devalues cryptocurrency, regional experts say. Issued by Swiss-based fintech firm 21 Shares AG, this single-asset product, which will trade under the ticker symbol ABTC, seeks to track both the investment results of Bitcoin, the...

These Darknet Markets May Soon See More Bitcoin Flowing
One of the largest darknet marketplaces in the world, Empire Market, mysteriously went offline last month. Though it’s still unclear if Empire is shut down for good (or if whoever runs it really made off with $30 million in Bitcoin as part of an exit scam), the question remains in an anonymous illicit economy, where might so many illicit buyers and sellers go? I believe that Icaraus Market will scam. Naive darknet users are rushing into new, unproven sites that are shilling forums like mad. I c...
