The price of gold is soaring as investors flock to the safe-haven asset. Bitcoin, on the other hand, refuses to budge.
Digital gold, AKA Bitcoin, has struggled to push past the $10,000 mark since its incredible recovery following Black Thursday, when Bitcoin’s price was cut by around 40% in a couple of days.
Gold, however, is having a ball—hitting a nine-year high of $1,817 per ounce on Wednesday.
BullionVault, a London-based online platform for trading physical gold, said that net demand for gold is breaking records. BullionVault holds over 40 tonnes of gold—worth over $2.5 billion.
Gold has typically been seen throughout history as a safe haven asset—performing well when other currencies or commodities are doing poorly. Investors flocked to the asset when COVID-19 wrought havoc on economies around the world.
Governments printing more money is another reason why investors are eying up bullion, the founder of Bridgewater Associates’s hedge fund, Ray Dalio, told Bloomberg this week.
This month, Galaxy Digital’s Mike Novogratz said in a CNBC interview that although Bitcoin has the potential to outplay gold, its volatility means that, at least for now, investors should hold onto the yellow metal.
That being said, a commodity analysis from Bloomberg last month said that along with gold, Bitcoin was also set to outperform other commodities in 2020.
This week, the price of Bitcoin increased, held firm, then survived a brief pump n’ dump largely intact. The current price of Bitcoin is $9,232, as of Sunday afternoon. Bitcoin started the week on an ebb, at $9,075, according to data from metrics site CoinMarketCap. From there, the only way was up. There was a quick spike at dawn on Monday when the price of the coin increased from $9,087 to $9,216 in around two hours. Onward, thereafter, to highs of $9,322 in the afternoon. After all of Monday's...
In the bigger picture, things have been going well for Bitcoin.
Despite its ups and downs this year, last month the asset’s price was up 32% YTD—meaning it had massively outperformed gold, which was up just 16% YTD.

Bitcoin isn’t the only cryptocurrency shining bright since the U.S. President Donald Trump slapped “reciprocal” tariffs on nearly every nation this month. Since Trump's Liberation Day on April 2, Solana and Bitcoin have outperformed other major cryptocurrencies, rising 14.5% to $145 and 7% to about $91,100, respectively, according to crypto data provider CoinGecko. Ethereum (-10%), XRP (-12%), and Dogecoin (-1%) have fallen. Solana and Bitcoin have buoyed the broader crypto sector, with the glo...
Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) just notched their strongest single-day performance in nearly three months, with institutional money pouring back into the space after weeks of muted flows. On Monday, Bitcoin ETFs collectively recorded $381.3 million in net inflows, their largest daily total since January 30, as per data from UK-based investment management firm Farside Investors. The inflows mark a notable shift after weeks of lukewarm demand, driven by macro uncertainty and tightening liqui...
Coinbase’s Layer 2 network Base’s creator, Jesse Pollak, has defended the platform’s focus on creators, following backlash over an experimental content token drop. “If you are a creator or developer and you want to be the #1 priority, we would love to have you on Base,” Pollak tweeted Monday. Pollak was responding to Pump.fun co-founder Alon Cohen’s criticism, who tweeted Monday, “traders are easily the most important user group in crypto,” not creators or developers. “I love traders, but our...
