Bitcoin Core, the open source nodenode and walletwallet software derived from Satoshi Nakamoto’s original client, received some significant tweaks in an update released earlier today.
Among the most significant changes in Bitcoin Core 0.21.0 is the introduction of “descriptor wallets,” which expand the ways in which Bitcoin wallets can be secured. Where traditional wallets require private keys to move Bitcoin, descriptor wallets instead require scripts, which provide more flexibility on the back end. These scripts can incorporate private keysprivate keys, but they aren’t limited by them in the way that traditional “legacy wallets” are.

Release notes for the update clarify that “the differences between Descriptor Wallets and Legacy Wallets are largely limited to non user facing things,” and that legacy wallets will remain the default option in Bitcoin Core, at least for now.
Andrew Chow, one of the developers working on Bitcoin Core, has proposed that legacy wallets be fully removed and replaced with descriptor wallets by 2023.
The new update also adds support for the latest version of the privacy browser Tor, which plans to phase out older versions this summer, due to safety concerns; Bitcoin Core 0.21.0 aims to eliminate compatibility issues for users looking to run nodes over the privacy network.
Schnorr/Taproot—a forthcoming upgrade to the Bitcoin protocol which improves privacy and scalability—appears in Bitcoin Core 0.21.0, too, though it’s not operational just yet. Though the code is included in the update, the Bitcoin mainnetmainnet will need to catch up before Bitcoin Core users can take advantage of it.
As catastrophic floods ravage central Texas and North Carolina, emergency responders are using professional and military-grade drones with infrared and real-time video to map flood zones, locate stranded victims, and direct rescue teams. In Texas, MQ-9 Reapers flying 18,000 feet above the impacted area assisted first responders in locating missing victims of the flooding, including those from Camp Mystic, a summer camp where 27 children and counselors lost their lives. But while drones assist in...

If you follow the latest in Bitcoin happenings, then you may have seen the name “Alkanes” pop up on your timeline via Ordinals and Runes enjoyers. But what is it? Alkanes is a new metaprotocol built on Bitcoin that introduces trustless smart contract functionality to the base layer, without relying on bridges or external execution layers. It allows developers to build apps and launch tokens natively on Bitcoin, expanding the functionality of the original blockchain. Developed by Oyl Corp, the pr...
