According to a new survey from Mizuho Securities, the investment branch of Mizuho Financial Group, nearly a fifth of PayPal users may already be taking advantage of the app’s new BitcoinBitcoin capabilities.
Of the 380 users surveyed, 17% said they’d already used PayPal to trade Bitcoin, and 65% said they would use Bitcoin to pay for goods and services.
That’s good news for the digital payments giant, which recently bet big on the mass adoption of cryptocurrencies. The company announced this past month that it would begin supporting payments in Bitcoin, Ethereum, Bitcoin Cash, and Litecoin for users in the US.
And CEO Dan Schulman has been beating the drum for these cryptocurrencies as actual payment systems, telling CNBC that “when you start to move crypto as a potential funding instrument… that bolsters its utility, and stabilizes it as well.”
The catch is that cryptocurrencies purchased within the PayPal app can’t be transferred out to other wallets, and non-PayPal crypto can’t be transferred in. And when crypto is spent on PayPal, it’s automatically converted into fiat currency, which is what the merchant ends up receiving.
Online payments giant PayPal sent shockwaves through the crypto community today, announcing that its customers will soon be able to buy, sell and spend Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. As well as sending the price of Bitcoin soaring, it’s being hailed as a watershed moment for the wider cryptocurrency industry. According to Statista, the number of active PayPal user accounts reached 346 million in the second quarter of 2020. Even if the new crypto features will only be available to US reside...
Mizuho also suggested that Bitcoin trading in PayPal’s user base could be a good thing for the stock price—the report has the company’s stock price target at $290, up from $270 (it’s at $218 today), and says that revenue could increase by ~20% next year.
PayPal stock is already up more than 100% since the start of the year. The price of Bitcoin is up nearly 164% year to date.

Another day, another crypto treasury. Biotech firm Windtree Therapeutics said Thursday that it plans to buy up to $700 million worth of BNB to put on its balance sheet—one day after the asset hit a new all-time high price. The Warrington, Pennsylvania-based company, which trades on the Nasdaq under the ticker WINT, said that it is raising up to $520 million to fuel BNB purchases after previously announcing a plan to buy $200 million in the cryptocurrency. It also said it would partner with crypt...
A former digital assets executive at BlackRock, Joseph Chalom, has joined publicly traded Ethereum treasury company SharpLink Gaming as co-CEO, the firm announced on Friday. Chalom, who helped launch BlackRock’s Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs, led the financial giant’s strategy on digital assets as the managing director and head of strategic ecosystem partnerships. “After 20 years at BlackRock and helping to lead its digital asset strategy, I’m beginning a new chapter: I’ve joined SharpLink Gaming a...
At Tron’s principal place of business in Winter Park, Florida, there are no apparent signs of Chinese crypto mogul Justin Sun or the $30 billion blockchain that he founded, such as placards, business cards, or even a sign. Instead, the publicly traded Tron—formerly known as SRM Entertainment—keeps a low profile at Regus, a communal office space in the affluent Orlando suburb, where the firm specialized in designing theme park merchandise and stuffed goods under its previous name. Two representat...
