A wallet apparently belonging to PlusToken, an alleged crypto Ponzi scheme, has withdrawn over 26 million EOS tokens (over $67 million) from its wallet, according to Whale Alert.
🚨 🚨 🚨 🚨 🚨 🚨 26,316,339 #EOS (67,139,663 USD) transferred from PlusToken to unknown wallet
— Whale Alert (@whale_alert) June 22, 2020
As Decrypt reported previously, PlusToken was accused of snatching up to $3 billion from its users last July. At the time, Chinese media reported that if the allegations were true, it would make PlusToken the biggest crypto Ponzi scheme to date.
Currently, it is unclear where or to whom exactly 26 million EOS were sent, since the receiving wallet is marked as “unknown.” If PlusToken’s organizers were to cash out, it could have a significant impact on the cryptocurrency market—or the price of EOS, at least.
Last December, PlusToken transferred over $105 million in Ethereum, similarly raising concern in regard to potential dumping and a subsequent crash of ETH’s price. A report by blockchain tracking firm Chainalysis suggested that selloffs of $185 million in Bitcoin by PlusToken could also have been responsible for depressing the price of Bitcoin.
At the time, Kim Grauer, a senior economist at Chainalysis, said that PlusToken could be at least partially responsible for “continued downward pressure” on the crypto market.
“That’s certainly something to consider when you are thinking about where the price is going, at least in the short term,” she noted.
At the time of writing, it looks like the movement of PlusToken’s funds has not affected the price of EOS. The token is up 0.35% on the day, trading at around $2.54, according to CoinMarketCap.
Social media personality and crypto investor Anthony Pompliano unveiled a $1 billion merger on Monday to create ProCap Financial, a Bitcoin-native financial services firm that will soon join a growing list of companies stockpiling the asset on the Nasdaq. Pompliano, who began promoting ProCap in April, said on X, formerly Twitter, that he had recently raised $750 million from “leading institutional investors on Wall Street” for the blank-check firm, alongside heavy hitters in the cryptosphere. “...
Strategy, formerly MicroStrategy, has snapped up 245 Bitcoin worth roughly $24.8 million at current prices, its second smallest BTC purchase this year, according to a company disclosure filed on Monday. The Virginia-based software firm bought the tokens for an average price of $105,856 per Bitcoin between June 16 and 22. The purchase brings its total holdings to 592,345 tokens worth roughly $60 billion based on BTC’s current price as listed on crypto data provider CoinGecko. Strategy's latest r...
Tokyo-listed Metaplanet has added another significant stack to its growing Bitcoin holdings, buying 1,111 Bitcoin worth $118 million on Monday. The purchase brings its total holdings to exactly 11,111 BTC as it races toward an ambitious target of acquiring 100,000 Bitcoin by the end of 2026. The investment firm disclosed the purchase in a June 23 filing, acquiring the Bitcoin at an average price of 15,535,502 yen (approximately $106,408) per coin. The symbolic purchase amount positions Metaplane...
