Interest in Bitcoin is declining and attention spans are shortening for the world of decentralized finance (DeFi), if Google trends data is anything to go by.
Google Trends data works like this: Each search term is assigned a numerical value that provides an indication of its popularity. Taken with a pinch of salt, Google's data provides a rough indication of the world's interest in various facets of the cryptocurrency market.
In the first week of September, Google gave Bitcoin a 51/100 in terms of popularity, when compared against itself in the past year. (Bitcoin hit 100 in the middle of May, around the time of the Bitcoin halving). When Bitcoin's price slumped at the beginning of September, so did interest in the largest cryptocurrency by market cap, to 41.
The interest stuck around that level ever since the price of the world’s biggest cryptocurrency by market cap stabilized in the past few weeks.
How about DeFi, the shorthand for decentralized finance, this summer's Hot Big New Crazy Thing? Weirdly enough, interest in the search term peaked at the end of March, when Bitcoin was at its lowest ebb this year—its price crashed amid the uncertainty caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
Then interest dipped in the following months until the first week of September, when it surged back to 99/100. Since then, it's fallen like a cheese wheel trundling down a hill, to 65/100.
While Bitcoin’s price today held steady at $11,351, the coins powering leading decentralized finance markets rode the last surf from the crazy, crazy summer of DeFi this weekend; while some are washed-up and gasping for air, others are thriving in this heady, humid market cycle. Decentralized lending protocols, non-custodial exchanges and synthetic derivatives—almost entirely based on Ethereum—spiked in volume in around August. But what was once an animated party in a cool summer breeze turned...
This is down to the DeFi explosion of this summer when investors poured billions of dollars into the latest cryptocurrency craze in a matter of months.
As interest in Bitcoin has remained relatively steady this year, one would expect worldwide interest in Ethereum to be booming (most DeFi projects are built on the platform). And it has increased—but modestly: by 11% since the start of the year.

Another solo Bitcoin miner defied the odds last week, processing a block and bagging a 3.125 BTC reward. At the time—including the transaction fees—that was a $259,637 payday. And it was one of several such solo scores in recent months. Was the miner lucky? Is solo mining becoming more common? And can an average Joe hook up a hobby mining machine and succeed with minimal resources compared to publicly traded miners? The answers vary. Solo miners, a term used to describe everything from individua...
Today marks what crypto enthusiasts celebrate as Satoshi Nakamoto's 50th birthday, according to the birth date the mysterious Bitcoin creator registered on his profile for the P2P Foundation—a nonprofit organization dedicated to researching and advocating for the adoption of P2P solutions. Based on his profile, Satoshi was born on April 5, 1975. That is, of course, as unverified as most of the lore surrounding the Satoshi saga—and the date carries symbolic weight that crypto historians find too...
Machine learning has been used to detect crypto malware targeting users of bitcoinlib, a popular Python library for making Bitcoin wallets. ReversingLabs says the malicious packages attempted to overwrite legitimate commands in order to extract sensitive database files. Researchers say bitcoinlib is a "widely used open-source library" that allows crypto wallets to be created and managed—attracting more than one million downloads since its launch. Named "bitcoinlibdbfix" and "bitcoinlib-dev," the...
