YFI, the governance token for decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol yearn.finance, last night peaked at $38,682. That is almost quadruple Bitcoin's price of $11,596 and almost twice Bitcoin's all-time high of $20,000.
yearn.finance aggregates all the different yields of different DeFi protocols in one neat website. It also lets users invest in 'vaults', where people earn yields together. A yield refers to the interest earned by lending out your coins on various lending protocols. In addition to earning interest on your crypto, you can earn so-called governance tokens, like YFI—a kind of loyalty program for DeFi.
Though their creators intended for governance tokens to empower holders to vote on proposals to update the network, in reality they're held as speculative assets. YFI is among the most popular. It has increased by 66% in the past 24 hours, according to data from metrics site CoinMarketCap.
The growth is crazy: on Friday morning, it was worth just $14,300. Trading of the token has boomed, too. On Friday, the daily trading volume of the coin was $68 million. Now, it's $879 million.
YFI token spinoff YFII has joined along for the ride. On Friday morning, it was worth $935. It has since increased by more than 5x, to $5,075 as of this writing.
It's the latest twist in a crazy day: YFII, the spinoff of—and stick with us here—YFI, has risen 222% in the past day, from $1,154 to its current price, $3,781. YFII's big day coincides with a record-breaking one for YFI, which recently surpassed $26,000, far more than Bitcoin's all-time high, and more than double its current price of $11,507. Confused? A primer: YFI is a governance token of yEarn, or yearn.finance, a decentralized finance (DeFi) app that aggregates the yields of various DeFi le...
One of the reasons why both of the tokens are worth so much is because of their scarce supply. YFI has a total supply of 30,000, and YFII has a total supply of 38,750. Bitcoin, by comparison, has a token supply of 18 million.

The documentary follows McKenzie—best known for roles on "The O.C." and "Gotham"—as he investigates the cryptocurrency world and interviews key figures, including during a trip to El Salvador to examine President Nayib Bukele's regime, which made Bitcoin legal tender in 2021. “When I star...
Ethereum just lost one of its long-time institutional backers. In a Thursday statement, algorithmic trading firm Two Prime announced it is dropping all exposure to Ethereum (ETH) and will exclusively manage and lend against Bitcoin (BTC) going forward, citing Ethereum’s unpredictable behavior, declining market momentum, and eroding institutional appeal. Crypto asset manager 21Shares applied for an exchange-traded fund tracking the price of Sui, according to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Wednesday. The 21Shares Sui ETF aims to broaden investors’ access to the native token of the layer-1 network designed for high-speed transactions, which has been dubbed by some as a “Solana Killer.” The filing named Coinbase as a custodian to safeguard investors’ funds, according to the registration statement, but did not specify...
