Bitcoin’s price today hit prices unseen since January 2018. Hooray for Bitcoin investors worldwide. But now the bad news: Bitcoin transaction fees have also increased to the highest price since January 2018, according to data from BitInfoCharts.com.
The average cost of a Bitcoin transaction is now $13. Thirteen dollars! Back on October 17, the average cost of a Bitcoin transaction was a semi-reasonable $1.5. That means that the average cost of a Bitcoin transaction has increased by about nine times in under two weeks.
And remember what happened in January 2018? Bitcoin had just hit its all-time high of $20,000, and was crashing...hard. That was Bitcoin’s Big Moment.
The parallel is that Bitcoin’s having another Big Moment right now. Bitcoin today hit highs of just over $14,000, a price unmatched since January 2018, and an increase of about $3,500 this month alone.
Bitcoin fees are a sign of hubbub on the network. They increase when the number of miners available to process transactions is not sufficient to handle the number of transactions that people want to be processed.
In this freest of free markets, miners increase the fees to compensate for the increased activity. The theory is that only people who desperately want to process transactions will cough up the extra money. As Bitcoin's price rises, more people flock to the network.
This is what happened on the Ethereum blockchain this summer. Ethereum’s Big Moment occurred due to the rise of decentralized finance, or DeFi, which refers to non-custodial financial products. Investors poured billions of dollars into Ethereum-based DeFi protocols when they started offering large incentives. Fees rose accordingly; they hit highs of $14.5 in one huge spike on September 2, according to BitInfoCharts.
Still, as long as “number go up” for Bitcoin, HODLers can't complain too much.

Bitcoin is heralded as the world’s hardest money, but the network lacks one of the most foundational financial tools: a native, dollar-denominated stablecoin. While other native Bitcoin stablecoins already exist, they are backed by Bitcoin, not dollars. That’s changing today with the announcement of USDB, a new stablecoin that aims to bring a regulated, U.S. dollar-backed asset directly to Bitcoin's base layer. Created by decentralized exchange Flashnet, USDB will be issued on Bitcoin layer-2 ne...
USDC issuer Circle slipped 5.5% early Tuesday as Compass Point, the equity research arm linked to the middle-market investment bank of the same name, initiated coverage with a neutral rating. Compass Point gave the company's shares—which trade on the New York Stock Exchange under the CRCL ticker—a $205 price target. The stock opened at $238.46, or 9.4% lower than its Monday closing price of $263.40. The stock has since struggled to pull even with its Monday close. Compass Point reasoned that alt...
Crypto dark markets have rebounded weeks after Telegram shut down the world's largest illicit marketplace, with successor platforms processing equal volumes, amounting to roughly $27 billion. Elliptic reported Monday that Tudou Guarantee marketplace has captured most of the transaction volume from Huione Guarantee, which Telegram banned on May 13 following the blockchain analytics firm's investigation. The report shows how Huione Guarantee's activity collapsed to zero immediately after May 11,...
