Traders this week watched the price of Bitcoin rise and rise, only to fall later in the week. As of June 28, the price of Bitcoin is $9,054, according to data metrics site CoinMarketCap.
Bitcoin started the week with strength, at around $9,300. Come Monday afternoon, it fared even better, rising to its weekly high of $9,680, dangerously close to the price point that it’s been pining for these past few weeks: $10,000.
But alas, a swing and a miss this week. Traders’ luck ran out on Wednesday, when the price of Bitcoin fell throughout the day. By the early hours of Thursday morning, Bitcoin’s price had fallen to lows of $9,114.
Things didn’t get much better for Bitcoin. It hit $9,320 later that day, but the price fell throughout the rest of the week to lows of $8,975 on Sunday.
Its low of $8,975 this week is the lowest Bitcoin’s been for just over a month; the last time Bitcoin’s price was this low was on May 27.
All of this suggests that Bitcoin’s struggling to push past the illustrious, mythical price point of $10,000.
The $10,000 figure is so important to traders because that was the price of Bitcoin in February.
Despite its ups and downs this year, Bitcoin (BTC) has put on a strong performance and is now up 32% YTD—outperforming gold by a wide margin. Bitcoin started 2020 strong and climbed from a starting point of just $7,200 up to as high as $10,400 by mid-February, equivalent to a 44% gain in under two months. This bullish momentum was cut short as Bitcoin gradually dropped off in the following month, due to a global market sell-off amidst concerns surrounding the spread of the Coronavirus. Bitcoin t...
In mid-March, the price of Bitcoin was cut in twain when it crashed along with global markets. The markets were worried about the uncertainty caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
Bitcoin has largely recovered. It’s even pushed past the $10,000 price point several. But nothing’s stuck. Bitcoin’s weak end to the week serves as a reminder that things still aren’t back to normal.

Bitcoin isn't the only cryptocurrency likely to surge. BNB is on track for a 360% rise, according to Standard Chartered. The utility token, which runs on its own blockchain, has been trading in line with Bitcoin and Ethereum, according to the bank's Global Head of Digital Assets Research, Geoffrey Kendrick. And this is likely to continue, despite the asset having little utility, Kendrick added in a Tuesday note. "BNB has traded almost exactly in line with an unweighted basket of Bitcoin and...
Two long-dormant Bitcoin whales moved 3,422 BTC—worth roughly $324.2 million—early Tuesday morning. Both wallets had been inactive since 2014, when Bitcoin traded at well under $1,000, and the two transfers represent some of the largest movements by dormant Bitcoin whales observed in several years. The identity the wallet owners and the reason for the move are unknown at the time of writing. It is also unknown if the wallets were owned by the same person or if they are in any way connected. Haliey Welch, who catapulted to internet fame after a street interview in which she detailed an oral sex technique, has apologized for her role in the Hawk Tuah meme coin scandal. She added that her silence since the incident was part of a “much-needed” mental health break. This comes after Welch promoted a Solana meme coin called Hawk Tuah (HAWK), in reference to her viral interview, that quickly imploded after its launch. Within 15 minutes, the token was created, soared to a $490 million marke...
