Blockchain platform Tron has launched the third season of its 2022 Grand Hackathon, with $1.2 million in prizes up for grabs.
Developers can participate in six tracks, including two all-new options. Joining the previous hackathon’s DeFi, GameFi, NFT and Web3 tracks are new Ecosystem and Academy tracks.
The Academy track is an in-person mini-hackathon for students, which will see them convene in a dedicated “hacker house” to work on their projects.
The Ecosystem track, meanwhile, is focused on attracting Ethereum projects to the Tron ecosystem in this season.
With Tron now the second-largest decentralized finance (DeFi) blockchain after Ethereum by total value locked (TVL), according to DeFi Llama, Dave Uhryniak, Director of Ecosystem Development at TRON DAO, is looking forward to welcoming Ethereum projects who are “looking to expand their reach” to the blockchain.
Four tracks continue the work of previous Tron hackathons. The DeFi track aims to reward innovative DeFi solutions that provide accessible financial services to billions of people, while the Web3 track is seeking contributions that will help to speed up the transition to the decentralized web.
The GameFi track will recognise projects building the next big game idea that combines blockchain technology with entertainment. And the NFT track is looking for innovative, novel applications for non-fungible tokens.
As in Season 2, there are two classifications of voting in this season's hackathon: judge voting and community voting. Each classification will have its own prize amounts.
The winning projects in the DeFi, GameFi, NFT, and Web3 tracks will be voted on by professional judges as well as the community. Judge-voted winners will receive a first place prize of $60,000, with a second place prize of $50,000. The third, fourth and fifth placed projects will receive $40,000, $30,000 and $20,000 respectively. The Academy track project winners will receive a first place prize of $15,000, with a second place prize of $10,000. The third, fourth, and fifth placed projects will receive $9,000, $8,000, and $7,000 respectively. In addition, five “honorable mention“ projects will receive $1,000 each.
The Ecosystem track will have a total of 10 winners: five technical prize awards and five creative prize awards. The winners in both the technical and creative categories will receive $15,000, with a second place award of $12,500. The third, fourth, and fifth place prizes are $10,000, $7,500, and $5,000 respectively.
The previous hackathon had over 1,800 participants, and with two new tracks and a $1.2 million prize pool, Uhryniak anticipates “lots of talented projects” joining the competition. To participate in the upcoming Tron Grand Hackathon Season 3, head to Trondao.org to apply.
