The French government has auctioned off a collection of seized Bitcoin—and one bidder inexplicably paid five times over the current price of BTC for a lot.
An unknown participant in the auction, in which the French government sold $34.5 million worth of Bitcoin seized during the investigation of the 2019 GateHub hack, paid €26,800 ($31,900) for a lot of 0.11 BTC.
The French government will auction Bitcoin worth $34.5 million seized from the alleged hackers of GateHub, a UK-based platform built on the XRP Ledger protocol. According to a recent report by Cyberguerre, the auction will be conducted on behalf of the French Agency for the Management and Recovery of Seized and Confiscated Assets (AGRASC) by Paris-based auction house Kapandji Morhange on March 17. Almost all of the Bitcoin put up for the auction–610 out of 611–were seized by the courts during t...
As revealed by popular French crypto reporter Grégory Raymond, at Bitcoin’s current prices, the buyer paid five times more than the actual value of the lot.

With BTC currently changing hands at prices just above $55,000, buying the same amount of Bitcoin at an exchange would cost approximately €5,160 ($6,144)—meaning that the unlucky buyer bought their 0.11 BTC at a rate of $290,000 per Bitcoin.
According to the terms of the auction, an additional fee of 14.28% applies for transferring the coins to the successful bidders. This means that the individual who purchased the lot in question will have to part with an extra €3,827 ($4,555) just to see the cryptocurrency arrive in their wallet.
Over the course of the auction, the rest of the lots–437 in total, worth between 0.11 BTC and 2 BTC each–sold at prices generally in line with Bitcoin’s current market valuation.
It's unclear whether the bidder experienced a technical mistake; if so, they were lucky they didn't fat-finger their bid on a 2 BTC lot, as that would've cost them over $660,000, including the auction fees.
The price of XRP climbed above $3.00 on Monday, hitting a six-month high as investor optimism about the asset’s usefulness and more favorable regulatory environment rose. The asset may also benefit from tokenization trends over the coming years, Matt Kreiser, an analyst at crypto analytics platform Messari, told Decrypt. He noted that XRP’s price movements over the past week are reminiscent of strength seen late last year. “It’s a resurgence of what happened in the fall after the election of Tr...
Funds offering exposure to Ethereum have been growing at a faster rate than Bitcoin counterparts, underscoring newfound demand for the asset, according to CoinShares Head of Research James Butterfill. Over the past 12 weeks, Ethereum-linked funds’ assets under management have grown 19.5% to $19.6 billion, he wrote in a report on Monday. The AUM of Bitcoin-linked funds’ has meanwhile increased 9.8% to $176 billion over the same period, he added. “People are preferring Ethereum over Bitcoin,” Butt...
Binance, the world’s largest centralized crypto exchange, is introducing a new “token generation event model” for its Binance Wallet. It will utilize the bonding curve mechanism that was popularized by Solana meme coin launchpad Pump.fun. However, unlike Pump.fun, users will be required to apply to launch a token on the platform. The new feature comes as part of a growing suite of token generation event products offered by Binance Wallet. Projects are required to apply to launch a token via the...
