British cryptographer and cypherpunk Adam Back is the inventor of Hashcash, a proof of work consensus mechanism that underpins Bitcoin's block generation process.
Back was cited in the Bitcoin whitepaper and was one of the first recipients of an email from Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto; it's also been suggested by, among others, the Financial Times that he is Satoshi.
