In brief

  • The minds behind Bitfinex have launched Dazaar.
  • It's a decentralized content creation platform.
  • It's a separate company to Bitfinex.

The creators of crypto exchange Bitfinex have come out with Dazaar, a peer-to-peer, decentralized content marketplace.

On Dazaar, whose code is up on GitHub, content creators can “instantly build a marketplace, create video content and livestream directly to an audience, via an open source, hyper-scalable protocol for data streams,” it wrote in a press release.

Rather than relying on a third-party content production site, like Patreon or OnlyFans, content creators on Dazaar Vision—Dazaar’s application—are only beholden to its open-source protocol.

“A user can host websites, stream information and provide services in a pure peer-to-peer fashion without middlemen,” it wrote.

Dazaar was created due to the frustration of university researchers, who lost out to companies monetizing data produced from research.

The platform was built on the Hypercore protocol. It is also cryptocurrency agnostic. Developers can add support for payment methods including Bitcoin, Ethereum ERC-20 tokens, and debit and credit cards.

“Dazaar is not created or founded by Bitfinex, it comes from the same people who created Bitfinex,” said Alex Welch, the spokesperson responsible for delivering the news.

Through her agency work, Welch has also represented beleaguered crypto exchange Bitfinex and its sister company, Tether—both of which are under investigation by the New York Attorney General for alleged fraud.

Instead, Dazaar is founded by "Dazaar Limited"—which isn’t.

“We believe Dazaar represents what the internet should be, open, free and hyper-scalable,” said Paolo Ardoino, a lead developer at Dazaar,” said Paolo Ardoino, a lead developer at Dazaar. Ardoino is also the Chief Technology Officer of Bitfinex.
