Mastercard has launched a new NFT-powered soccer trivia game for the 2023/2024 UEFA Champions League tournament, offering fans the chance to win match tickets by testing their league knowledge, according to a press release.

The competition will kick off 30 minutes before Tuesday night UEFA Champions League matches, starting February 13. Mastercard customers can participate by collecting branded NFT passes through the firm’s new "Pass to Priceless" platform. Mastercard’s NFT passes are minted on Polygon, an Ethereum scaling network.

Players can answer questions about Champions League history and statistics, with each round’s winners earning match tickets as they climb up a season-long leaderboard. The top player after the April 30 semi-finals will win tickets to the Champions League Final at Wembley Stadium in London.

Crypto payments firm MoonPay developed the technology behind Mastercard’s NFT-driven experience, with MoonPay’s Otherlife creative agency supporting as well. MoonPay and Mastercard announced plans last October to collaborate on Web3 initiatives.

"As a UEFA Champions League partner of 30 years, we know first-hand the unwavering passion that football fans have for the game, so we’re excited to leverage our Web3 platform, Pass to Priceless, to put their passion and knowledge to the ultimate test," said Beatrice Cornacchia, Mastercard's executive vice president of marketing and communications in Europe, in a release.

The Champions League trivia contest will be open to Mastercard cardholders in several countries including the United States, United Kingdom, France, Spain, and Brazil. It runs until the June 1 final.
