Musician and meme coin figurehead Iggy Azalea claims that was told that she couldn’t twerk onstage alongside a group of dancers at this week’s Solana Breakpoint conference as it “would go too viral.”
Azalea said that she canceled her appearance at the event following the late news, which she described as a “bait and switch” from conference organizers. The Australian rapper released a Solana meme coin called MOTHER in June amid the celebrity token boom.
Unlike many others who hopped on the celeb coin trend, Azalea has continued to promote her project and is bringing utility to holders via partnerships. But this hasn’t stopped people from criticizing the celebrity meme coin movement, highlighting the short life span that most of these tokens have.
As such, a debate between Azalea and Eric Wall—co-founder of Bitcoin Ordinals project Taproot Wizards—was arranged for Solana Breakpoint to get to the bottom of the debate: Are celebrity coins all bad?
Azalea wrote that she planned to bring a group of dancers that would join her in “throwing ass” on Wall to end the debate. Originally, Azalea claimed, the organizers said that this moment "would go too viral" and detract from the more serious topics discussed at the conference, plus they did not want to “blindside Eric” in the process.
She said that Wall ultimately agreed to the planned stunt, and that organizers approved modified version of the plan. But once she arrived in Singapore, Azalea said that she was told that she could not do it due to concerns over local regulations.
“I suspect it’s more about the fact they would like to keep any dancing off camera,” a disgruntled Azalea wrote on Twitter. “So respectfully, as I was very clear about my terms last week: I’m not attending the event.”
The Solana Foundation has not publicly commented on the matter, and did not respond to Decrypt’s request for comment on by the time of publication. But Azalea’s would-be debate partner did weigh in on the missed opportunity.
“[I] got so close to having Iggy and multiple dancers twerking on me on tape forever, only to get rugged of my glory and erection,” Wall posted on Twitter, sharing an earlier video clip of content creator Sommi saying they'd put a curse on him.
