Crypto gaming firm Gala Games has announced a hackathon at the 2024 Game Developers Conference (GDC), in partnership with gaming PC manufacturer Alienware and Amazon Web Services (AWS).
With a $1 million prize pool, the 24-hour hackathon is open to both in-person and online GDC attendees. The hackathon will see projects leverage Gala's GalaChain SDK, deploying the layer-1 blockchain that underpins games including Spider Tanks, Legacy and Eternal Paradox.
"Gala is excited to join forces with Amazon Web Services and Alienware to bring the GalaChain Hackathon to GDC," Gala Games President of Blockchain, Jason Brink, told Decrypt. "We can't wait to see what the attendees build as they compete for their portion of the $1 million prize pool."
Hackathon participants will be able to take advantage of GalaChain's technology, which underpins innovative game features like the next-gen upgradeable NFTs found in "addictive" mobile RPG Champions Arena.
As well as games, GalaChain, which delivers a claimed block time of under two seconds and boasts a network of over 30,000 nodes, also underpins projects including decentralized exchange (DEX) GalaSwap and the Rep social network.
Expect "fierce" competition in the GDC hackathon, with everyone from hobby enthusiasts to veteran coders set to participate. For those lucky enough to be attending in person, Gala promises live music and "delectable" food to keep spirits up over the 24-hour marathon.
Gala Games' partnership with AWS and Alienware for the hackathon provides ample evidence of how Web3 gaming is making inroads into the mainstream—Dell-owned Alienware is one of the world's biggest gaming PC brands, with its Aurora and Area 51 desktops and laptops gracing many a gamer's setup.
