Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said that the ridesharing giant may start allowing its users to pay for journeys using Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. He told CNBC today that the company is looking into whether it would be beneficial to the company to make this happen.

"Just like we accept all kinds of local currency we are going to look at cryptocurrency and or Bitcoin in terms of currency to transact. That's good for business, that's good for our riders and our eaters," Khosrowshahi said.

The CEO said that Uber will not be following in Tesla's footsteps by putting Bitcoin on its balance sheet. "It was a conversation that happened that has been quickly dismissed. We're going to keep our cash safe. We're not in the speculation business," he said.

Fintech processor not convinced

According to another report by CNBC, fintech giant Adyen, which is used by Uber—as well as Facebook and Netflix—has no intention of providing support for cryptocurrency payments.

Adyen CEO Pieter van der Does said that cryptocurrencies are too volatile and that its clients aren't asking for it to do so.

“Bitcoin is more of an investment asset than a payment method,” Van der Does said.

But if Uber does decide to accept Bitcoin, then it will have at least one client asking for it.
