Former Australian senator Cory Bernardi has become a Bitcoin convert, describing the cryptocurrency as "the millennial's version [of] gold."

Writing on Twitter, Bernardi said, "Become convert to Bitcoin in last couple of years. My conclusion is it is the millennial's version [of] gold. Still see risks attached but are basically the same as other asset classes - leg, confidence and demand. See demand getting stronger," he tweeted.

Bernardi also pointed toward Morgan Creek Digital partner Anthony Pompliano for his understanding of the Bitcoin space. Pompliano later commented, "There are hundreds of people pushing content, education and knowledge in the space. Complete team effort :)."

The politician stepped down in January after an 11-year career. Having served under the Liberal Party, he formed a far-right party called the Australian Conservatives but it struggled to gain traction.

Bernardi's political life was full of controversy. According to The Guardian, after pushing for an inquiry into halal food, he later suggested that the non-governmental organizations involved in halal certification could be funding terrorism. He also criticized a Safe Schools program, arguing that it indoctrinated children with “Marxist cultural relativism.”

He now runs his own website and membership-based Confidential Community, with a self-proclaimed "famous" newsletter. He claims to offer, "More common sense than most people can handle."

Bernardi has only tweeted about Bitcoin once before. On November 6, he retweeted Pompliano and said that Confidential had covered the impact of the election on Bitcoin.

But now that he's revealed himself to the Bitcoin community, expect more tweets to follow.

Update: This article has been updated with comment from Anthony Pompliano and further details about Bernardi's political life.
