In brief

  • Dapper Labs will produce officially-licensed Dr. Seuss blockchain collectibles.
  • The digital decals will be sold in packs and feature various iconic characters.
  • Dapper Labs is the maker of CryptoKitties and the upcoming NBA Top Shot.

From CryptoKitties to The Cat in the Hat? It’s true.

Dapper Labs—makers of both CryptoKitties and the upcoming NBA Top Shot—today announced a partnership with Dr. Seuss Enterprises to create official digital collectibles based on the work of beloved children’s author and illustrator Theodor “Dr. Seuss” Geisel.

Based on the same Flow blockchain that powers those aforementioned projects, the official Dr. Seuss digital collectibles will be sold in packs, letting buyers purchase and verifiably own digital decals based on the likes of The Cat in the Hat, The Lorax, Horton, and Thing One and Thing Two.

The Dr. Seuss digital collectibles seek to combine key components of Dapper Labs’ other projects, with colorful, CryptoKitties-esque renditions of iconic characters paired with various collectible aspects of NBA Top Shot, including the ability to assemble and publicly showcase themed collections. The Dr. Seuss collectibles are expected to launch “soon,” according to the website’s landing page.

“Dr. Seuss Enterprises is very excited to partner with Dapper Labs to create blockchain-based Dr. Seuss decals,” president Susan Brandt told Decrypt.

“I remember distinctly the moment I knew DSE needed to bring our characters to our fans in this new, innovative way. I was sitting on an airplane and saw an article about Dapper Labs and their blockchain CryptoKitties. I was fascinated with this new technology and method of collecting digital art,” she said.

“I knew we had a Kitty, or rather a Cat in the Hat, that would be perfect for this type of project. I contacted Dapper Labs right when I landed,” said Brandt. “Working with Dapper Labs on these blockchain collectibles lets us provide fans with unique digital collectibles that they can not only show off now, but also hold onto, cherish, and share with others for years to come, in the same way you would with physical collections.”

Dr. Seuss wrote and illustrated more than 60 books during his lifetime, and many remain top sellers long after his death in 1991. His projects have been adapted into feature films, cartoon series, and stage shows, but this blockchain-driven project represents an especially forward-thinking undertaking for such classic literary creations.

“With NBA Top Shot now running on Flow, I’m confident we have solved the technical requirements and have a clear value proposition to take crypto mainstream,” Dapper Labs founder and CEO Roham Gharegozlou told Decrypt.

“Collectibles are endemic to fandom, and crypto for the first time allows for digital collectibles that can be traded peer-to-peer, opening an entirely new digital universe for communities. Our work with Dr. Seuss Enterprises lets us bring a proven formula to hundreds of millions of new community members spanning multiple generations.”
